Protected Area Management Support
The Conservation Outcomes team of experienced ecologists that are registered with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) provide customised protected area management support to landowners and management teams within the Biodiversity Stewardship Program across Southern Africa by co-developing (together with the management of the protected area) customised tools, systems and structures that enable improved and effective management. Protected Area Management Support ranges from wildlife and vegetation management, focusing on aspects such as fire, soil and water management, to wildlife monitoring such as carrying capacities, stocking rates and individual species management plans. We also focus on the security management of protected areas, right through to providing guidance on the more administrative aspects such as staff and equipment management, financial management and the legal requirements protected area management under the Biodiversity Stewardship Program. We focus on ensuring the Protected Area Management Plan is implemented by developing customised tools such as the Annual Plan of Operation (APO) that enables the drafting of Annual Reports. Periodically Conservation Outcomes facilitates a METT Assessment (Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool) of Protected Areas we are partnered with to identify areas in which management effectiveness can be improved within a protected area and within the organisation managing the protected area.
To enable this on the ground support to Protected Areas across the country, we have partnered with organisations such as SANParks, EarthRanger, IUCN, WWF-SA, BirdLife SA, Endangered Wildlife Trust, Cape Nature and LENS to enable rolling out this support to Protected Areas and our partners within the region.
