Greater Kromme Stewardship Project
The Greater Kromme Stewardship (GKS) project is an innovative conservation initiative funded by a collective of wind power generating companies in the Kouga-Koukamma region of the Eastern Cape. The project compensates for the environmental impacts of the GKS wind farm partners by securing important biodiversity (including threatened birds and bats), key habitats, and essential ecological processes by establishing new Protected Areas within the broader landscape using the Biodiversity Stewardship approach. The project provides a conservation presence in the landscape to engage and collaborate with a variety of landowners, key stakeholders, and strategic partnerships with the intent to unlock conservation options for private, communal, and state-owned land within important biodiversity in the region. The GKS project also aims to identify project-relevant socio-economic development and enterprise development opportunities in the region for the GKS wind farm partners to invest in. Through the GKS project, the renewable energy companies are working together to achieve a greater positive impact on the natural environment and local communities in order to leave a long-term conservation legacy in the broader region.
